Nose Alone
This lithograph forms part of Kentridge’s nose series, created in parallel with his acclaimed 2010 production of the nose for the metropolitan opera. The imagery — absurd and theatrical — draws on Gogol’s 1836 satire in which a man’s nose leaves his face and climbs the ranks of russian society. Kentridge’s exploration is layered with themes of state control, selfhood, and the surreal dislocations of modern life.
